Turmeric Absorption: Traditional methods vs Oral spray

The healing properties of turmeric are well-documented with numerous products on the market claiming to harness the power of the ‘wonder spice’.

However, digesting the beneficial curcuminoids; the active ingredient within turmeric, is notoriously difficult.

Turmeric’s absorption issues

Research has shown that around only 1% is absorbed through the digestive system.

This is because turmeric is not water soluble, causing it to clump together when coming in to contact with water in the gut and leaving it unable to pass through the stomachs lining to enter the bloodstream.

Traditional methods

Turmeric requires some help in order for your body to absorb it. There are a number of methods that are considered to help increase turmeric’s bioavailability:

Extracting the curcumin

Turmeric powder only contains around 3% curcumin, so to increase the bioavailability many supplements will extract the curcumin to create a high concentration (usually 95%). Studies that identified medicinal properties when taking turmeric used high doses, usually between 500-2000mg per day, often using an extract with a high concentration of curcumin.

Adding black pepper

Studies have found that piperine, a major component in black pepper, may increase the bioavailability. Many supplements on the market add black pepper for this reason.

Consume with fats

As turmeric is a fat-soluble spice, some studies suggest that the curcumin component is more easily absorbed if added to or taken with fats.

Heat it up

According to one study boiling turmeric for 10 minutes will increase solubility, which could help elevate absorption.

Turmeric Oral Spray – pioneering encapsulation technology

With our Turmeric oral spray we have overcome this absorption issue without the need for black pepper, fats or heat.

By extracting the 3 active curcuminoids and then encapsulating them in a naturally derived starch know as cyclodextrin, this process makes the curcuminoid molecules water soluble, preventing them from clumping together.

These are then solubilized to create an evenly dispersed, water-based solution. This pioneering formulation, called Cyclocurmin® increases bioavailability and absorption.

The formulation is then easily absorbed in to the body allowing for greater uptake of the curcuminoids.

Other benefits

This process also addresses the two other issues associated with turmeric which are its bitter taste and, as a bright orange spice, the concern of staining.

The cyclodextrin encapsulation process improves taste and as it makes it water soluble any contact with skin, teeth or clothes can be removed with water.

In addition, the spray provides ultimate convenience as it doesn’t need to be taken alongside food or drink and can be used on the go.
