Folic Acid

How do vitamin oral sprays help with morning sickness?

Most women will experience some form of morning sickness during pregnancy. It’s a completely natural part of the process but it can make it difficult to keep vitamins and supplements down. When taking traditional tablets, you rely on absorption directly through the gut. However, during bouts of morning sickness, you may end up expelling a lot of these nutrients before they are absorbed.

By using an oral spray, the nutrients are quickly absorbed via the soft-tissue of the inner cheek, delivering the nutrients quickly into the rich vein system within the mouth, bypassing primary processing by the digestive system.

Plus, they all have great-tasting, natural flavours!

What is the difference between folic acid, folate and methylfolate?

Folic Acid is a form for Folate (B9). Methlyfolate is the most active form of folate. It is naturally preferred by the body and does not need to be converted before it can be utilised.

Is the Folic Acid Oral Spray suitable for those with special dietary requirements?

Yes. It is completely vegan and officially approved by the Vegetarian Society. It is also suitable for those following a coeliac or diabetic diet, as well as those with digestive issues such as IBS.

Are there any contraindications with folic acid?

There are no interactions with any other products or medications when using our Folic Acid supplement.

Do I need to take the spray with food or drink?

No. The oral spray delivery mechanism avoids primary processing by the digestive system, meaning it can be taken at any time of day with or without food. The active ingredients are delivered directly into the bloodstream via the mucosal membranes in the mouth.

Iron

Is the Iron Oral Spray vegan approved?

Yes. Our Iron Oral Spray is vegan approved by the vegetarian society.

How long will the Iron Oral Spray last?

The Iron Oral Spray will provide a minimum of 48 daily doses (4 sprays per dose).

What form of iron is in the Iron Oral Spray?

The form of iron is Ferric EDTA (Fe+++).

Why does Iron Oral Spray contain sweetener and sugar?

There are two reasons we include sugar within our Iron spray, taste and stability. We include stevia as a sweetener, but it can become unstable in the product in higher doses. We combat this by reducing the stevia, and adding in a small amount of sugar to improve the stability, quality and taste of the final product.

Iron has a very strong, unpleasant flavour profile that can be very hard to mask. We have spent a long time working on the flavour of our Iron spray to produce a great tasting formula that supports usage and compliance. The amount of sugar used is the equivalent to 5 grains, which means the spray is suitable for anyone following a diabetic diet.

Should I take all four sprays together or spread it throughout the day?

This is down to personal preference, either way provides optimal absorption. Though you may find it easier to take them all together to ensure you don’t forget a dose.

The oral sprays do not need to be taken with food or a drink so can be used at your convenience.

Our studies have found that the best place for absorption are on the inside of the cheek. When using multiple sprays we would recommend spraying in this area.

Do I need to take the spray with food or drink?

No. The oral spray delivery mechanism avoids primary processing by the digestive system, meaning it can be taken at any time of day with or without food. The active ingredients are delivered directly into the bloodstream via the mucosal membranes in the mouth.

What time of day should I use the spray?

The spray can be taken at any time of day, the key is to make it part of your daily routine.

Many people find it is easiest to take it first thing in the morning as part of their morning routine, but as the sprays are easy to use, portable and don’t need to be taken with food or drink, they can be used any time of day.

Magnesium

Why does it tingle when I apply it to my skin?

The most important fact to remember is that this isn’t an allergic reaction to the magnesium, as magnesium is naturally found within the body and is vital to good health. This can actually be a sign the body’s cellular magnesium levels are low. This tingling sensation is caused by the magnesium, which is a large molecule being rapidly absorbed through the epidermis.

Another factor that can influence this reaction is the amount used on one area. We recommend using a small amount per area and increasing gradually. Also if you have dry or broken skin it may heighten the sensation so avoid these areas.

This reaction will decrease as your body’s cellular magnesium levels increase.

To reduce the reaction we recommend the following techniques:

  • Apply only a small amount to any individual skin area. Massage in well.
  • Apply after a shower onto wet skin, while pores are open.
  • Vary the application areas to increase the bodies overall magnesium level.
  • Little but often is the key. Massage in and wait for a minute or so then try a little more.

The key is to apply transdermal magnesium wherever it feels comfortable. The magnesium, once absorbed into the skin, is circulated around the body so there is no direct need to focus just on a single area. However, once your magnesium levels begin to rise you will find areas that were sensitive before are no longer.

Magnesium Flakes can provide a gentle solution to raising your levels. Added to a bath or foot bath they can provide a lower concentration of the solution that will still help increase your magnesium levels.

Can I use transdermal magnesium during pregnancy?

Transdermal magnesium is perfectly safe to use during pregnancy with no restrictions on dosage levels during this time.

However, it is important that during pregnancy you avoid essential oils. Magnesium Joint Body Spray, Magnesium Muscle Body Spray and Magnesium Sleep Body Spray all contain essential oils.

All our other Magnesium products are suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I take medication, are there any contraindications?

There are no contraindications with any of our transdermal magnesium products.

Is magnesium safe to take orally?

Our Magnesium Flakes, Magnesium Oil Body Spray and Magnesium Sensitive sprays are all a pure concentration of magnesium chloride making them perfectly safe to ingest. The purity of our source means that these products are free from man-made pollutants and safe for human consumption.

However, as magnesium is a natural relaxant, if you take a large dose orally it can have a laxative effect. Using it as a transdermal product means that it avoids processing by the digestive system and so too avoids the laxative effect; therefore you can take larger doses through the skin.

What is the source of the magnesium chloride?

The magnesium chloride we use is a solution mined in Veendam in the Netherlands. It is mined from an ancient seabed that has been condensed and purified for over 250 million years. To mine the magnesium chloride, spring water is carefully pumped down to dissolve the seam and the solution is brought up to the surface. This solution is the foundation of our Magnesium Body Sprays, Lotions, Gel and Flakes.

Can I overdose on transdermal magnesium?

You do not need to worry about overdosing when using transdermal magnesium. Upper limits are only set when using the product orally, as large doses can have a laxative effect due to it being a natural relaxant.

Toxic symptoms from increased magnesium intake are not common as the body eliminates excess amounts, unless there are serious problems with kidney function.

What is the difference between the Magnesium Flakes and the Magnesium Soak?

The key difference between Magnesium Soak and Magnesium Flakes is the concentration. Magnesium Soak contains magnesium chloride at 31% concentration while the Magnesium Flakes are at a concentration of 47%.

Magnesium Flakes will provide a higher level of elemental magnesium when added to a bath than Magnesium Soak will. However, for those with skin conditions where the skin is broken Magnesium Soak provides a more gentle option.

What is the difference between the five Magnesium Oil sprays?

Magnesium Oil Body Spray is our strongest and purest magnesium spray. This is suitable for anyone including children and during pregnancy. This spray is purely the magnesium chloride brine as it comes out of the ground. It is called an oil due to its hygroscopic quality meaning it acts like an oil. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 200mg (57% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Magnesium Sensitive spray features the same pure magnesium as the Magnesium Oil Body Spray, but with a lower concentration of 15% magnesium chloride. It has been dermatologically tested so that you can be 100% confident that it will be kinder to sensitive skin. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 100mg (28% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Magnesium Sleep spray has added essential oils; bergamot, clary sage, grape seed and chamomile. These give off a calming and relaxing aroma to help aid normal restful sleep. Adding the essential oils brings the magnesium chloride concentration down to 28%. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 180mg (51% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Magnesium Muscle spray has added essential oils; arnica, capsicum and lemon oil. These essential oils have a warming effect and so help to increase blood flow to aid cell detox during and after sport. The added essential oils bring the magnesium chloride concentration down to 28%. Every 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 180mg (51% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Magnesium Joint spray combines magnesium chloride and 105mg of glucosamine to help support normal joint function. It also has added wintergreen and menthol oil for cooling and calming effect.

The pump on my spray has stopped working. What do I do now?

Unfortunately due to the fact our products are natural, occasionally crystallisation can occur in the pump mechanism, preventing it from working. This can often occur if the spray hasn’t been stored at room temperature or hasn’t been used in a while.

This can easily be fixed by removing the pump from the bottle and running it under a warm tap for a few minutes while pressing down on the pump to help remove the blockage.

If this doesn’t work then please contact customerservices@betteryou.com immediately.

Test Kits

When is the best time to test?

For convenience, we suggest you collect your sample first thing in the morning. This helps get an accurate understanding of your level that has not been influenced by time of day or intake of food.

While your vitamin D levels may be higher in the summer due to the natural increase in sunlight, there is still no ‘best’ time to test. Ensuring your levels are optimal throughout the entire year will provide you with the most health benefit.

How is my blood sample collected?

The test is carried out using dry blood spot samples. This means using a simple finger prick to leave 4 spots of blood on a card which is then sent to the lab for analysis. The kit will be sent to your chosen address along with full instructions and a pre-paid returns envelope for your sample.

Is there any difference in your tests?

Our vitamin D tests differ from our Iron and B12 tests due to the collection method and how you receive your results. Ultimately, they each provide you with a detailed picture of your levels but use different analysis methods.

How will my data be stored?

We understand the importance of data security when dealing with sensitive data such as biometric testing. Your results will be securely processed and stored on secure servers.

If taking a vitamin D test, your results will be communicated via email, if taking an Iron or B12 test, your results will be available via a secure online portal.

By purchasing and completing the tests you agree that your data will be shared between BetterYou and our testing partners.

What lab will process my sample?

The laboratories we partner with are UK based, accredited and meet regulatory standards. They are some of the largest private labs in the country but also work directly with the NHS.

How often should I take the blood test?

We would recommend testing at different times of the year to establish your year-round levels. We would suggest a maximum of 4 times per year, every 3-4 months.

Can I get this test done for free by my GP?

Blood tests can be carried out by your GP but they often take a long time to complete and you are rarely given detailed results. By using one of our tests you get a bespoke supplementation plan as soon as your results are available and it is easy to track your results over time. If you’re at all concerned with your results, you can take them to your GP for further analysis.

Do I need to stop supplementing before testing?

It is completely up to you if you want to stop supplementing before taking a test. If you are supplementing, by taking a test you will establish if you need to up or reduce your dosage but if you decide to stop supplementation before testing, you will get a greater idea of your baseline levels from diet alone.

If you do wish to find your baseline dietary level, we recommend a washout period of 2 weeks (Iron and B12) and 4-6 weeks (Vitamin D).

Always consult your GP or healthcare professional before making a change to your supplementation plan.

Are the kits easy to use?

Our at-home kits are incredibly easy to complete. They allow you to quickly and easily take your sample without the need for a professional or visit to a GP surgery/clinic.

Why should I choose BetterYou at-home health checks?

By using a BetterYou at-home health check you get to see an accurate insight into your levels of a specific nutrient. Not only this, but we also provide you with a detailed supplementation plan included within the price to help you maintain or elevate your levels for optimal health.

We will also provide you with a complimentary oral spray to help you kick-start your journey to optimal health, all included in a single one-off price.

Who are Forth?

Forth are one of our chosen biomarker testing partners. They are a leading UK-based private blood test provider. With a team of expert biochemists and medical doctors, they use UKAS approved laboratories to analyse your sample on our behalf.

Where can I view my results?

Once you have activated your kit and sent off your sample, you will be emailed when your results are ready. They will be made available via our online portal.

How soon do I have to post my sample after testing?

Due to the nature of the wet blood sample, your blood sample must be posted to the lab using the pre-paid envelope on the day the sample is taken. The microtube contains chemicals which prevent blood clotting, any delays may affect the laboratory’s ability to take a sample.

It’s important to post your sample Monday – Thursday, this reduces the time spent in the postal system and speeds up the sample getting to the lab.

When is the best time to test?

For convenience, we suggest your collect your sample first thing in the morning. This helps get an accurate understanding of your level which will not been influenced by time of day or intake of food.

All of our tests can be taken throughout the year, there is no ‘best’ time to test.

How is my blood sample collected?

Blood samples are collected using a simple finger prick – collecting a couple of drops of blood into a small tube. The kit will be sent to your chosen address along with full instructions and a pre-paid returns envelope for your sample.
